Spring Time Is Coming, What Should I Do With My Sump Pump?

Winter is almost over, warmer temperatures are peaking through here and there, and with the winter and fall that we just went through, you want to make sure your sump pump is in working order to avoid a major issue. Chances are, if you have a sump pump, you know about it, and you also know how quickly your basement can become damaged if your sump pump is not working properly.

As the warmer air makes its way back around our area, the ground will begin to thaw, leaving the ground oversaturated. This will find its way into your sump pump pit in your basement. You should know that your sump pump has a floater device built-in or attached to your pump, and when the water reached a certain level, it will raise your float, and trigger the sump pump to turn on and pump the water outside of your house. You want to make sure that this floated and your pump are in working order, so we have listed a few things that you can do to make sure before the ground thaws out.

  • Check It
    • First, let’s check the sump pump pit. This is the area that your sump pump sits in, and you want to make sure that there is nothing that can interfere with it working properly. Debris from the outside or even bugs can make there way into your sump pump pit. Make sure that this pit is clean and clear of anything that may stop it from operating properly.
  • Test It
    • Once you confirm that the pit is clean and clear, now it is time to test it. Start by pouring a few gallons of water into the pit, and you want to watch and make sure that the floater moves up based on the water level. At some point of the floater rising, you will hear it click. This noise should trigger the sump pump to turn on and pump out the water you just poured in. If it does not turn on, try unplugging and plugging the sump pump back in. If it still does not turn on, give us a call immediately as your sump pump is more than likely faulty.
